 Poor construction and too spendyMay 07, 2009

We bought this for my daughter's 4th birthday. The size is great, the pieces are fun, but...The sliding doors broke very easily; the little 'tabs' which hold them in. Also the elevator mechanism broke right off; can't glue it back on, it would ruin it. I called Mattel and said these parts are unavailable as this was a Holiday item. Shame on Mattel for poor construction at a hefty price. The one I had Christmas of '78 was better quality with tons more accessories. Don't waste your money on this.

The pink lured my daughter to choose this Barbie mansion above other, better constructed versions. It does come with a nice array of trinkets--pretend food, plates, a light that actually illuminates, etc. My complaint is that it is poorly constructed. The brittle plastic actually didn't withstand the minor construction upon taking it right out of the box. (The hinges on the third floor closet-like doors broke during installation.) The play space is great. The open rooms are wide enough that a child can engage in open-ended pretend play. There are several buttons that trigger sounds--doorbell, sizzling from the stove, music, flushing toilet. This pink monolith is perhaps the ultimate Barbie mansion for a three- or four-year-old. Moms and dads should be prepared to be unimpressed with the construction. But if the child's delight is what matters most, this is a sure winner!

We bought this 2 years ago. My daughter still loves it! She has taken good care of it and it has lasted. She has added MANY pieces to it. She has played with it by herself for hours and with her friends when they come over. Wonderful for imagination. It looks so pretty in her room. She is 12 now and we plan on selling it. It has been well worth it. We could have bought it at a younger age but we didn't know she liked barbies/barbie houses till we bought it. She would rate it a 5 along with us (her parents).

Although it is made of plastic, and probably won't last very long, it really doesn't matter because she loves it so much!
